Matters Arising.

Future of the Old School

Following the departure of Mrs. Barrington as the booking secretary, problems that had been raised with the council many times by Mrs. Barrington in the past, were used as a reason to suddenly close the Old School. Most groups that had bookings in the Old School have managed to find alternative venues, apart from the Art Club and a slight clash of times on a Wednesday between the Brownies and T’ai Chi. Thanks are due to the School, the Baptist Chapel, Stepping Stones and the Scouts as well as the Beaufort Hotel for helping to keep the spirit of the village alive. The possibility of using the area formerly used by the ‘Rascals’ in the infant school was proposed.

Monmouth County Council, after pressure from the Community Council, Raglan Village Hall and Recreation Association and the leader of the Council, Andrew Crump, have agreed that the building may re-open after category ‘A’ work has been carried out.

A nominal figure of £30,000 has been suggested as the figure needed for the improvement work. Monmouth Council has suggested that the cost of a building survey may be found from one of its budgets to ascertain the true cost. All agree that the work needs to be carried out urgently to re-open the Old School as soon as possible.

A new caretaker to replace Mrs. Barrington has been appointed from the 7th January, subject to CRB checks.

Progress Reports

M.U.G.A. The plans for the MUGA were rejected by the planning committee when it eventually reached them at the end of November due to part of the scheme being in the flight path of bats. The footpaths also need to be brought up to a higher standard. All the objections raised have now been addressed so it is hoped that planning will not be delayed much longer. The contract for the work still stands so theoretically work could be started as soon as planning is granted.

Village Hall A meeting is planned with Colin Barnard’s successor, Jackie Morris, next week. The plans for the junior school have now been received and forwarded to the architect for work to begin on converting the school to a village hall.

Fund Raising

Cinema Amanda Vaughan gave a report on the meeting held on the 15th November. The possibilities of obtaining more compact equipment together with lower costs are making showing films in Raglan a more viable proposition.

Raglan Day It was proposed that a meeting be held in January to begin the preparations for Raglan Day to which all interested groups and businesses be invited.

Father Christmas  Preparations are well in hand for the tour of Father Christmas around the village. Posters will be placed in all venues where there are children and flyers will be handed to all the children at the primary school.

Due to the fire in the sports pavilion, it was suggested that the collection be used to help the young footballers replace some of the equipment lost.

Young Footballers had been presented with a full kit. Thankfully this was not destroyed in the fire.

A.O.B.

Sports Pavilion Fire It was proposed that Raglan Village Hall and Recreation Association make an interest free loan to the Football club of £1,000 to help replace some of the £3-4,0000 worth of equipment lost in the fire. This was unanimously agreed. A local building contractor is supplying temporary buildings until the pavilion is replaced.

Presentation It was agreed that Amanda Vaughan is to liaise with Mrs. Barrington’s daughter to find a suitable gift of about £50 be presented to Mrs. Barrington in the New Year.
